Our First Week

It's so hard for me to believe that my beautiful daughter is already one week old! She has gone through so many changes already... I can't imagine what the rest of her life and all of her changes will be like.

On Monday of this week, Grandma Sally blessed us with her presence. She stayed all week to help out with the cleaning, laundry, cooking (Sean was especially happy with this part), and of course, plenty of grandma spoiling time.

And boy, were we glad to have her here on Thursday. Thursday morning I got a phone call from someone at Mercy. It seems that Keelyn's hyperthyroidism test from her newborn bloodwork came back as borderline, so we had to go get it done again.

Now, any of you Mom's out there that read this blog can imagine how scared/nervous/worried I got when I heard that, so Grandma Sally went with Sean and I to the hospital to get her tests done again. It was nice to know that I had my mom there during that. We will find out the results of the test within the next two weeks. We are praying that everything comes out ok with this test. Here is Grandma Sally telling Keelyn that she can't scare poor Mommy like that anymore :).

Today, Sean took Keelyn back to see Grandma Pam, Grandpa Larry and to meet Uncle Kevin for the day. Since this was my first day truly away from my baby (they were gone for 5.5 HOURS!!), I, being the hormonal WRECK that I am, completely lost it. So, again, Grandma Sally stepped in and saved the day by taking me shopping and out to eat at the Cheesecake Factory where we shared an oh-so-yummy piece of Snickers cheesecake. YUMM-O!!!!!!!

When Daddy & daughter returned home, Grandma Sally said her good-byes to Keelyn and me then went home. But... not without holding her precious granddaughter one more time.

I think today's good-bye was harder for me than when I said good-bye to her when I went to college!!! So, Mom, I just want to tell you thank you for everything you have done for us this week and I love you!!!

Within an hour of Mom leaving, my sister Katie (aka: bestest friend EVER from high school) will be arriving to spend the night and meet her brand new niece!!! I'm sure that I will be a wreck when she leaves, too.

Now... what would be a post without some pictures of my beautiful baby girl?

Beautiful.

Keelyn's Big Arrival!!!

****Warning: OBSCENELY long post ahead!!!****
And possibly TMI at times...
Consider yourself warned :0)

Well as we all know from where I last left off, I checked into Mercy Medical Center on Thursday, July 23rd at 8pm. I answered all the nurses questions, got into the sweet hospital gown, got my IV put in (FYI... I was a big ol' wimp at this and cried like, well, a baby!). At 9:15pm, the nurse checked me out. She told us that I was 2-3cm dilated and thin. Woohooo!!! Progress from Tuesday's dr. appt. That's what I like to hear!! When she hooked me up to the monitors, she also found that my contractions were 3-6 minutes apart. Hmmm... funny... I didn't really even know I was having them. 'Is this all it will be?' I thought? Oh... if I only knew then what I foudn out later. But I digress... She gave me the first Cervidal pill and left us to be.

At 12:15am, a new nurse came my way, checked me out and said I was 3-4cm dilated, and contractions were ranging from 2 minutes to 5 minutes apart. Again, progress! WOOT!! She called Dr. Johnson to see what he wanted for the next step and he said to forget the next dose of Cervidal, bring on the Pitocin! So, that's exactly what she did. And boy did that stuff start to work!!! From 12:15-5:15, there wasn't a whole lot of sleep for this girl. I was having some serious contractions (yeah, I knew I was contracting now. Oh, for the hours earlier when I didn't know...)

At 5:15am, the nurse came back in to check me out and found that I was 4-5cm dilated and asked if I was ready for my epidural. Am I? Yep!! Sign me up!!! So she called the anesthesiologist and within minutes she was in my room getting me prepped. Not gonna lie, the overwhelmingness (is that really a word?) of the events started to hit me. OMG! I'm getting closer!!! Surprisingly, I handled the epidural WAY better than I handled the IV. Call me crazy. It's ok. I pretty much am. Again, I digress.

The epidural began doing its thing within minutes (well, felt like minutes to me, that is) and I was able to drift off to sleep for several hours. I'm not sure what time my next nurses came in, but it was maybe around 7:30 or 8am. They again checked me out and wahlah! More progress! Let me also say, Mary Beth and Lacinda were THE BEST labor & delivery nurses that I could have ever asked for.

**Side story: Lacinda is also a nurse at Dr. Johnson's office and was the nurse who filled
in for Dr. Johnson to hear Keelyn's first heartbeat on that fateful January day.
It was meant to be.**

At 9:30am, they checked me out and I found I was completely dilated but still had some cervix left on my left side. They said they would check me again at 10am, but I was having some pretty strong contractions. Again, I LONGED for the time the night before when I didn't know I was contracting!!

At 9:45am, I told Sean to call them because I thought I needed to push. Rather than calling, nervous nelly Sean went out to get them :). Mary Beth & Lacinda made their way to my bed and allowed me to give one push and said I wasn't quite there yet... needed to wait some more. Wait some more?!??! Are you kidding me!?!?

At some point, Dr. Johnson came in to check me out, and he noticed that I had meconium in my amniotic sac (Keelyn pooped inside me...nice). So he informed Sean he wouldn't be able to cut the cord, and that we were going to have to have NICU doctor and nurses in the room when I delivered. I was a smidge nervous, but trusted that everything was going to be fine with it. Anyway, back to the story...

So, I followed their directions, and sure enough, they came back in at 10am to see how I was doing. Contractions were much stronger, and like magic, I was 100% effaced and ready to go. So they got the bed and gear all set up, and put an oxygen mask on me because they said the baby needed it. Around 10:10am, I began pushing. I pushed, and pushed, and pushed for a bit, then I hit a wall. I'm going to be a Mom. I'm in labor. I'm going to be a Mom. You would think I would have thought this before, but I think everything finally hit me. I had a large, overwhelming, OMG what did I get myself into, oxygen mask flipping off meltdown and cried and cried and cried. Mary Beth, being the ultra professional that she was looked at me, told me in the nicest way possible to put my mask back on and gave me a come to Jesus meeting. I calmed myself down, and began pushing again.

Now somewhere in here, I had a funny thing (to everyone else, not to me) happen. Keep in mind, I was given my epidural at 5:15am, therefore my legs were completely numb, therefore I was unable to get to the bathroom to brush my teeth. So I'm wearing this dang oxygen mask breathing heavy like none other with the pushing and all of a sudden I yelled out, "My breath stinks!". Yep, that's me...classic and smooth. This sends everyone else to start laughing and tell me it's ok, it's not bothering us, to which I replied "That's because I'm the one breathing it in in the mask!". I flipped it off once more, and once more, Mary Beth had to have a come to Jesus meeting with me. I put it back on.

More pushing followed, with me hitting Sean on the arm, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt and telling him to either pull my leg back or push my head. This was the only "negative" thing I did to Sean the entire time.

**Side note: Let me just say this... my husband was absolutely WONDERFUL during the entire labor and delivery. He did everything he was asked to do, by myself and the nurses, and was just what I needed beside me. I love you, Sean!**

I was apparently pushing the right way now as they called for Dr. Johnson to get there, as well as for the NICU team to come, too. In they came, a few more minutes of pushing, and at 10:55am, Keelyn Avery Lynam made her way into the world!!!!!!! Dr. Johnson suctioned her nose and mouth and handed her off to the NICU team. Once the NICU people had her, Sean left my side to watch them work while Dr. Johnson had to work on me. And boy did he have to work on me. Keelyn gave me severe lacerations on the inside and Dr. Johnson and the nurses worked on stitching me for around 45 minutes, at which point they ended up having to insert a vag pack as well as a catheter.

At some point during my repair work, the NICU doctor came over to tell me that everything checked out ok with her, and Sean followed her on down to the nursery for her to get measured and weighed. They did bring her over to me so I could see her (except I really couldn't see her because I didn't have my glasses on), but I saw enough to know that I had just given birth to the most beautiful baby girl the world has ever seen!!

After awhile, Sean made his way back upstairs to where I was laying wondering what on earth my body had just gone through, as well as my Mom & Dad, and then the arrival of Keelyn. I was informed that she weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz., and was 19 3/4 in. tall.

Friday & Saturday consisted of LOTS of visitors (as you can see), and we were released on Sunday...

Monday morning was Daddy/daughter morning. Sean took Keelyn to see a few people (and do some bragging), then took her to his favorite store...Menards. What a crazy guy! Grandma Sally came back on Monday to stay for the week to help out with cooking, cleaning, laundry, and of course, getting in some good ol' spoiling of her granddaughter.

Tuesday consisted of hanging out and going to the doctor. Dr. El Dadah said she's doing great. We are working on some feeding problems (she's super hungry, wants to eat NOW, and doesn't want to work for it so we are doing some major supplementing of formula until Mommy can get enough milk made).

So far, we are having a GREAT time. Keelyn is, quite possible, the best baby in the entire world. She sleeps 3-4 hour stretches, and she only fusses when she's hungry. And did you know she has the cutest lil' toes in the world? And she's also the world's best snuggler. We are so blessed to have her as a daughter.

Get ready blogosphere... Keelyn's here, so let the bragging begin!!

BTW... congrats to any of you who made it through this whole post. I promise I will try my best to not make any more obscenely long posts like this anymore.

The last night

I got to thinking earlier (I know, scary huh?) that tonight is the last night that Sean and I will spend sleeping in our home as non-parents. The other thought I had was that the next night we spend sleeping in our home, we will have a baby.

How crazy/wonderful/exciting/beautiful/exciting is that!?!?!??! I'd say there's nothing better.

My mom and neighbors seem to think that her granddaughter is going to make her big appearance sometime tonight as opposed to following the schedule set by the doctor. I guess we'll have to see. Although I want her here, I'm all set for following the timeline set by Dr. Munro and you all know me with my schedules... God forbid anything get off schedule!

Pregnancy needs to be re-named to "The Biggest Waiting Game of Your Life"!!

The BIG news of the day

Today started off like most days for me... a sprint (well, what I call a sprint) to the bathroom. TMI? Sorry if so, but that's the life of a 40 4/7 week preggers woman. Then I got myself all cleaned up and headed to my favorite place in the world... my OB/GYN!!

Dr. Munro's first words to me when he walked in the door "what are you still doing here pregnant?" Good question Barney. Good question.

He then went on to tell me that I had 2 options. Great! I am the most undecisive person in the world and he's going to give me 2 choices when it comes to my baby girl's delivery?!?!?! Where, oh where was my husband to help me on this??!??!?! Oh wait, that's right, he was sitting through class :(. Poor guy.

Back to the options.
Option #1: Go to the hospital Thursday night @ 8pm to start the inducing process, break water bag on Friday morning and get the ball rolling. With this option I had warnings... if I'm 0-3cm dilated, the chance of me having a c-section is 40%. If I'm past 3cm, the chance of a c-section goes to 15%.

Option #2: Go back to the doc on Friday for a non-stress test. If Momma and baby are ok, then check into the hospital on Sunday night @ 8pm to start inducing process, break water bag on Monday and wait for her to be born. With this option, I still had the % chances for c-section.

What's a soon-to-be, stressed out Momma to do??!?! Why, get your cervix checked while you ponder what is the better day for your first born to be born, of course!! And???? I'm 2cm dilated!! WOOHOOOOO!!!! Finally, some stinkin' progress! Walking around Adventureland with my family yesterday must have done something (besides make my Vienna sausage cankles even BIGGER!!!!)

The first thing I said was "my family came to town". Dr. Munro said, "I don't care about your family. I don't care about your husband. I only care about you and the baby, so it's what YOU want to do. But you can't hate me if you end up with a c-section".

SO my BIG news of the day??????? I chose Option #1. Yes, that's right... Sean and I will make our way to Mercy and check-in at 8pm on Thursday night. They will give me some tablets that will start softening my cervix and hopefully make the contractions start comin' my way. Friday morning we'll see how I'm progressing and what else they need to do to get me going.

I'm excited, but I think Sean is moreso than I am. HOWEVER, Daddy over here wants to know exactly when she's coming. He's having a very hard time handling the fact that she could come anywhere between now and Friday night.

So, there you have it blog stalkers. Sean and I will be the oh-so-proud parents of our beautiful baby girl on Friday, July 24th (if all goes well)... one month after Mommy's birthday :). Should be easy for Daddy to remember that, huh? HA!!!

I do have some pics to post of Adventureland and yours truly on my big trip to the doc day, but those will have to come tomorrow for your viewing pleasure.

It's my Due Date and I'll Cry if I Want To...

Well fellow blogospherians, the big day is here. My due date. I'm gonna go with a big negator on me having her today. I find it very ironic that I'm dilated 0 and the countdown is now at all 0's. It reaffirms everything to me.

Poor Sean... he is finally seeing me on an emotional rollercoaster. I say finally because I don't think I've been on much of one. Granted, there were *ahem* a few times when Momzilla made an appearance, but the crying? Never really saw it. Until the past 3 days. Yesterday I cried and I don't even know why. I just did. It wasn't even once.

HOWEVER, with her NOT coming yet, it allowed me to get in one final deep clean of the house, some laundry, grocery shopping, and to get supper dishes washed AND put away... in the same night!! (a rarity in this house at times). There unfortunately were parts of the house that I couldn't clean though. For example, I cannot reach the mirror in either of the bathrooms due to the largeness of the belly, nor could I reach the window over the sink to Windex that, either.

This also allows both Sean and myself the chance (*maybe*) to go to the North vs. East substate Varsity baseball game tonight. The Varsity team this year is the 8th grade crew that Sean started his coaching career with, and he has a pretty good bond with them (and I do with the parents). So we'll be headin' out for our VERY LAST DATE NIGHT without a kid EVER... to a baseball game. I know I've said it before but man is my hubby a lucky guy that he married a girl like me who likes baseball so much :)

I've got more housework & paperwork for my part-time job to finish up today, but if I find the time, I will attempt to post a picture of me at exactly 40 weeks!

Not only will next week be exciting baby news wise, but on Sunday, my brother Jason, his wife Ann and our cute nephew Owen will be visiting us from Texas!! Lots of stuff going on next week. You know what that means, right? Get ready for picture OVERLOAD!!!!!!!

Happy Friday everyone :)

Wednesday's Wordage

These are some words/phrases that came up during my baby doctor appointment today.

"Still at 0... can't even really call it a fingertip." Dr. Johnson
"My due date is Friday & I have family coming from Texas on Sunday... any chance they'll see her?" me
"Well, come back in next week. If you haven't had your baby by that appointment, we'll look at inducing you." Dr. Johnson
"Anything under 41 weeks is considered elective, so if they're full, you'll keep getting bumped," Dr. Johnson

"Pitocin?" me (in a semi-frantic sort of sense)
"Yes, pitocin." Dr Johnson said, matter-of-factly.

Pretty sure you should be pickin' up on the vibe that Keelyn IS Miss Stubborn! Just like her Mommy... and her Daddy.

Now, there's still a chance she could come on her due date. Or before. But more than likely, she'll be late.

Maybe we should start a pool for her birthday??? Will that make her come???

The good news? (if one could call it that...) I will officially miss at least the first 3 days of teacher meetings due to being on maternity leave! WOOHOOOOOOO!!!! The question is: do I go in anyway? Give me your 2 cents on this.
